Singapore Shiok
I have always had my doubts about Singapore. I like my travel spots to have a bit of grit and Singapore doesn't exactly have the reputation of being very gritty...
But like any developing city, Singapore is a mix of old and new, which doesn't always work well together. But Singaporeans are proud of their history and are keen to keep traditions alive. The food, language and architecture are unique to them and quite honestly not something that I always understood or appreciated.
I expected the food to be good and it's phenomenal. The weather I knew would be hot and it is. I read there would be greenery all around and no surprise it's a garden metropolis. You also get the air conditioned malls and bright lights... but the biggest surprises come when you take a little turn around the corner and really dig your heels in – you end up finding some really special places.
So now I admit that after searching, exploring and being introduced to a few spots by some very good local friends, Singapore has totally won me over. In fact, I think I'm in damn shiok.
